N.B.
Hermann Traugott Louis Fuechsel was born in Braunschweig, Germany, and moved to New York in 1858 soon after meeting American artists Albert Bierstadt and Worthington Whittredge while studying at the Düsseldorf Academy. He kept a studio in New York in the same building as many other Hudson River School artists, including Sanford Robinson Gifford. The present work is an understated, charming landscape, depicting a solitary seaside church overlooking the water. The setting sun soaks the scene in a luminous golden glow and the loose brushstrokes of the trees and grasses suggest a subtle, warm ocean breeze.
