Provenance
Lewis Edward Herzog was the son of well-known landscape painter Hermann Herzog. He traveled and studied throughout London, Rome, Berlin, Munich, and Venice, incorporating the loose, impressionistic style of the early European modernists into his own landscape paintings. The present work dates to after Herzog's 1898 return to the United States and displays the loose, free brushstrokes and earthen hues that he adopted on his travels.
