N.B.
Bruce Crane was born in New York City and developed an interest in painting while on childhood trips to the Adirondacks. He was mentored by and close with artist Alexander Wyant and was a member of the Lyme Art Colony of Connecticut. Crane is best known for his atmospheric, impressionistic depictions of the landscapes of the Adirondacks and Catskills, which reflect the influence of French Tonalist painters and American landscapists. Crane preferred simple subjects and painted them with ethereal forms and hues. The present work depicts a solitary farmhouse along an empty snow-covered road, the sky illuminated with the golden haze of sunset - a particular specialty of Crane's. The scene is quiet, tranquil, and picturesque, evoking the stillness of a crisp winter twilight in the countryside.
