N.B.
Frank Charles Peyraud was born in Switzerland and came to the United States with his brother at age 21, settling in Chicago and beginning studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. He spent most of his career in Chicago and its suburbs, also traveling for periods throughout Europe. Peyraud was known for his soft, impressionistic landscape paintings, many of which focus on the effect of light at dawn, sunset, or nighttime. The present painting depicts the gentle, rich orange glow of sunset in the wintertime; skeletal trees wind toward the twilight sky while the dim glow of the sun falls across the snow and water.

Chase Mishkin (1937-2022), a previous owner of this work, was a prolific theatrical producer and a flamboyant personality, and one of the most prominent female producers on Broadway. Though consistently involved in the arts as a philanthropist (she served on President Carter's Advisory Committee on the Arts), she began her professional career in Los Angeles after the death of her husband, a carpet manufacturer. She soon moved to New York where she won two Tony Awards and brought the beloved character Dame Edna Everage to Broadway, along with dozens of shows including The Beauty Queen of Leenane and the musical adaptation of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
