Lady with Umbrella in the Snow
An unusually tall and narrow kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink and colours on paper in momigami (kneaded paper) and silk mounts with porcelain jikusaki (roller ends): A lady beneath an umbrella walking beneath a snow-laden tree on tall geta (wooden clogs), with a glimpse of the red silk interior of her sleeve; signed Kiyochika and sealed Shin; with a modern wood storage box and a cardboard slipcase
Overall: 200 × 13cm (78 3/4 × 5 1/8in); image: 142 × 10cm (55 7/8 × 3 7/8in) (2).

Although best known for his newspaper work and his evocative woodblock views of Tokyo and dramatic war scenes, in his later years Kiyochika gave up prints and devoted himself to painting in a distinctive version of the Shijō style.
