Tiger on a Rock
Kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink and slight colours on silk in silk mounts: A dramatically foreshortened snarling tiger crouching on a rock, its tail extending toward the top of the composition; signed Kanoe-inu chūshun Renzan (Renzan, in the second month of 1850) and sealed Gantoku no in and Azana Shidō; with a modern wood storage box

Footnotes
Kishi Renzan was a leading pupil and adoptive son of Kishi Ganku, and (along with Gantai) became leader of the Kishi school after Ganku's death. Best known for his decorative wall paintings in the Imperial Palace and honoured as one of the 'Four Great Masters of Kyoto' toward the end of his life, he used his fast and lively brush technique to create this dramatic reinterpretation of Ganku's favourite subject.
