NAKABAYASHI CHIKUTŌ 中林竹洞 (1776–1853)

Spring Forest and Distant Peaks
Yokomono kakejiku (hanging scroll in horizontal format), ink and colours on silk in silk mounts: In the foreground tall trees by a lakeside retreat, in the background mountains and ravines, with pine trees sketched in the artist's characteristic manner; inscribed and signed Shunrin enkō Tenpō kinoe-tatsu mōtō Aizanrōchū Chūtan (Spring Forest and Distant Peaks, Chūtan, at the Mountain-Loving Pavilion in early winter of 1844) and sealed Narimasa no in and Chikutō jisaku; with a wood tomobako storage box inscribed Chikutō rōjin Sekiden o narrate sansui zu tatejiku (Vertical landscape scroll by Chikutō in the manner of Shen Zhou [Chinese, 1427–1509]); inscribed inside the lid Baisō dai with two seals (the painter Matsumura Baisō, 1884–1934)
