The Chinese poem may be translated as follows: The soft warmth of a spring river laps the clean sand / here and there skiffs pass, floating over the green / From both banks the glow of plum blossom bursts forth / breezes through the willows drag out the long branches / A line of wine-shop banners waves from the distant market / and a few high notes of music fall on spreading waves / The year's first crescent moon has still not risen / as we rest the oars, listening to village song.
