Ancient Plum Tree
Kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink on paper in silk mounts: The branch of an ancient plum tree in blossom, with a ten-character poetic inscription signed Tōkō Etsu, sealed Tōkō at top right and with two further artist's seals and three collectors' seals, the reverse with the three-character collector's seal of Robert van Gulik; with a modern double wood storage box, the inner box with a cardboard slipcase

Tōkō Shin'etsu was a high-ranking Chinese priest who fled to Japan after the downfall of the Ming dynasty and became a priestly retainer of Tokugawa Mitsukuni, Lord of the Mito Province branch of the ruling Tokugawa Family; he was also a skilled musician, an aspect of his achievement that was studied in detail by the famed scholar and novelist Dr Robert van Gulik, a previous owner of this scroll.
