MOKUAN SHŌTŌ 木庵性瑫 (MUAN XINGTAO, 1611–1684)
Edo period (1615-1868), mid-17th century
Calligraphy: Moon
Kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink on paper in silk mounts: The character Tsuki (Moon) in bold brushstrokes, followed by the remaining 13 characters of a couplet by the Tang-dynasty Chinese poet Lang Shiyuan (in Japanese, Rōshigen) 月在上方諸品靜 心持半偈萬緣空 which may be translated 'High in the sky, the moon has such quiet refinement / If the heart could hold on to just half a prayer / all attachments would be void', signed Ōbaku Mokuan dōjin sho and sealed Hōgai gakushi, Mokuanshi and Shakkai Tō no in; with an inscribed wood storage box
Overall: 112 × 66cm (44 1/8 × 26in); image: 29 × 60cm (11 3/8 × 23 5/8in) (2).
