Footnotes

Jean Milant's collaboration with Vija Celmins was grounded in a shared attention to detail. In the early 1970s at Cirrus Editions, Milant worked closely with Celmins to produce several of her lithographs, including Desert. The print, a dense, all-over field of tiny pebbles rendered with stunning exactness, pushed the limits of lithography. Milant's sensitivity to tonal nuance and texture allowed Celmins to translate the obsessive detail of her drawings into the printed form without losing their atmosphere. Milant translated Celmins' meticulous images of oceans, skies, and star fields into print with remarkable sensitivity. Their partnership highlighted Milant's technical precision and his ability to support artists whose work required intensity and a mastery of the medium. In 1994, Cirrus hosted a solo exhibition of Celmins' prints, underscoring the importance of their collaboration. Milant's commitment to experimentation and perfection provided Celmins with the ideal environment to explore the graphic potential of her deeply meditative imagery.
