Footnotes

In 2003, Jean Milant approached Los Angeles-based, Mark Bradford, to make prints together at Cirrus Editions. Like many of the artists who visited Cirrus, this was Bradford's first foray into printmaking. Bradford famously integrated 'end wraps' or 'perm papers,' the tissue papers used in beauty salons to protect hair in the perming process, into his paintings. Through Jean Milant's meticulous mastery of the medium, they were able to transfer this practice into his printmaking. Bradford would singe the edges of the end wraps and arrange them directly onto mylar sheets. The mylar was then placed on lithography stones coated with photo emulsion. When exposed to the UV light from the Southern California sun, those charred edges transformed into dark outlines. Mark Bradford's prints are embedded with elements of his life growing up in Los Angeles, featuring his mom's hair salon in Leimert Park in the imagery of this cool-toned monoprint.
