Sir Peter Blake is one of the leading figures of the British Pop Art movement and a lifelong friend of David Hockney. The two artists met as students at the Royal College of Art and were exhibited alongside each other in the college's landmark Young Contemporaries show in 1961.
Blake is perhaps best known for co-creating the iconic album cover for The Beatles' 1967 release Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. A central figure in Pop Art, Blake's work is defined by his fascination with popular culture, often expressed through vibrant, image-rich collages. In recognition of his contributions to art, he was knighted in 2002 at Buckingham Palace.
Hockney and Blake have remained close throughout their careers, and their enduring friendship is captured in Peter Anderson's 2009 silver gelatin print. The photograph shows the two artists in deep conversation at an exhibition, standing in front of Hockney's 1961 painting We Two Boys Together Clinging. Even decades after first meeting, the two continue to support and inspire one another, reflecting a rare and lasting bond.
