Footnotes

Provenance
Vision 21, Bonhams, London, 24 October 2007, lot 55, whereby acquired by the previous owners.
By descent to the present owner.

This proof aside from the main edition is presumably dedicated to Sir Stephen Harold Spender CBE (28 February 1909 – 16 July 1995), a close friend and collaborator of Hockney's.

The two worked together on a few projects, most notably the China Diary. In 1981, they travelled to China together and created an illustrated diary chronicling their journey, including visits to famous sites and interactions with Chinese poets and artists. Hockney contributed his photographs, drawings, and watercolours, while Spender penned the text.

In addition to the China Diary, Spender also collaborated with Hockney on Hockney's Alphabet. This project, which aimed to raise funds for the AIDS Crisis Trust, featured Hockney's illustrations alongside literary musings from various writers, with Spender orchestrating the collaboration.
