Abstract Expressionist artist and printmaker Lee Chesney had an illustrious career in teaching and administration for over six decades. After obtaining his BFA in Painting from the University of Colorado, Boulder and his MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa, he taught and chaired the Graduate Programs in Painting and Printmaking at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign for seventeen years. He served as the Associate Dean of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California for five years and arrived in Hawaiʻi in 1972 to accept a Professor and Chair position in the Graduate Art Programs at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. 1

The present work was created during his tenure at UHM from 1972 to 1984. A beloved professor, Chesney stayed with UHM for over four decades, holding an Emeritus position from 1984 until his passing in 2016.
