John Kjargaard's early work in commercial art paved the way for his fine art career. While a student at the California School of Fine Arts, he worked as a color etcher for a San Francisco engraving firm. This opportunity led him to Honolulu in 1937 where he became a photo-engraver for the influential Paradise of the Pacific magazine. He continued printmaking for his entire career while developing collage-based fine art. Kjargaard served as the board president of the venerable Honolulu Printmakers and was one of the few artists to be invited to create a gift print twice, once in 1955 and again in 1976. 1
