The present lot depicts thirty-four tropical aquatic life specimens native to Hawaiʻi including fish, crustaceans, and sharks. All but one work is identified with 'Honolulu Fish Exhibit' and the Hawaiian name of the specimen. Several are also annotated with the specimen's use or legend, which captures their cultural reverence and transforms them beyond mere illustration.

While the origin of this set is unknown, it was likely created as a visual record of a live fish exhibit. These exhibits were organized near and far at such venues as the Honolulu Aquarium, the St. Louis World's Fair, the Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition, and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, to share knowledge, express cultural pride, and build diplomacy.
