While Lloyd Sexton is best-known as a Hawaiian landscape painter, he was equally 'intrigued by the flower motifs of the Islands.' 1 Sexton first developed an interest in rendering tropical botanicals at Punahou. While still a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he was given his first one-man gallery and museum exhibitions at The Vose Galleries of Boston and the Honolulu Museum of Art, respectively, for flower paintings. 2 His 1933 show at HoMA featured 17 flower paintings, including 'many various varieties of plumaria [sic].' 3 His works were praised for his use of 'rich shades to bring out the characteristics of the flowers. They have a naturalness and a tropic beauty, that only one born and brought up in the Islands can attain.' 4
