Helen Moses Cassidy became a painter after an illustrious athletic career. She was born in Hilo and attended Punahou School from 1920 to 1924. She was an exceptional swimmer for the Outrigger Canoe Club and qualified for the 1920 U.S. Summer Olympics as a 14-year-old freshman. After graduation, she trained Punahou's swimmers and served as their swim coach from 1935 to 1937. 1
Cassidy took up painting in the 1940s, studying under Lloyd Sexton among other local artists. In her later career, she moved to Waimea on the Big Island, exhibiting at the Kona Art Center and helping to establish the Waimea Arts Council in the late 1970s.
