Saleroom notices
The present work depicts the road from Hilo to Mauna Kea, from the decade when Hitchcock and his young family lived at Pohakuloa near mile marker 24 on what is now called Route 200 or Saddle Road. In 1895, Hitchcock wrote, 'The carriage road from Hilo to the volcano is a well built macadamized road the entire distance of thirty-one miles. Part of it runs through the heavy forest that girdles the mountains. The foliage is rich though not strictly tropical. The semi-tropical palms, huge tree ferns, beautiful undergrowth and a variety of native trees, some with remarkably beautiful foliage, all mingled and brought together by the ie-ie vine with its brilliant scarlet and orange spike, give a charm to this drive that is unique to the Islands, and that is hard to surpass anywhere for beauty and variety of foliage and coloring.' 1 1 D. Howard Hitchcock, 'Town of Hilo.' Paradise of the Pacific, August 1895, Vol. VIII, No. 8, p. 114.
