The present work exemplifies David Howard Hitchcock's volcanic nocturnes that heighten light and atmospheric effects. It depicts the active lava lake in Halemaʻumaʻu crater at Kīlauea that captured the public imagination in the late 1880s to early 1890s. In December 1894, an earthquake drained the lava lake, putting an end to the awe-inspiring sight until 1906 when it refilled. The grand slopes of Mauna Loa volcano are partially visible through the column of ash and gas.
