FOUR WOOD NETSUKE

Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century
Comprising a model of a boat with a Chinese official and attendants, a 20-character poem on the underside; a compact carving of Tenaga massaging Ashinaga's knees as they both sit; a Chinese boy kneeling and holding a fan; an oni (demon) seated on a drum, using the striker to scratch his back, signed Gyokkō and with a kaō
2 1/2in (6.3cm) wide, the largest (4).

Footnotes

The Chinese verse on the first, by the Tang-dynasty poet and statesman Su Ting (670-737), reads: The north wind blows the white clouds / For ten thousand leagues along the Fen River / My heart is aflutter, like a mass of falling leaves / But the noise of the gale drowns out the sounds of autumn.
