A WOOD SHEATH INRŌ AND A FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRŌ

Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century
The first of rounded rectangular plan with integral himotoshi, the top and bottom with removable covers revealing a removable rectangular wood inner case with a sliding cover and four inner compartments, the inrō carved in low and sunken relief with a continuous design of the elderly woodcutter and his wife finding the peach which bears the strong boy Momotarō, decorated in gold, black, and simulated-bronze lacquer, signed Yoshimasa tō (Carved by Yoshimasa), the inner compartments containing two solid gold coins (18k, total weight 6.4 grams), fitted with a coral bead ojime and a stone netsuke; the second of lenticular plan with applied himotoshi and decorated in gold, red, and brown hiramaki-e and takamaki-e on a roiro-nuri ground with a cranes in fight over Matsushima, signed Kajikawa, with a coral bead ojime
