THREE FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRŌ

Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century
The first of rounded rectangular plan, each case with rounded profile decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and shell and gold-foil overlays with a phoenix in flight and a paulownia tree on a black-lacquer ground, fitted with a cylindrical lacquer ojime decorated with floral designs and a manju netsuke with cherry blossoms in silver and gold lacquer on a black lacquer ground; the second of rounded rectangular plan decorated in iro-e takamaki-e with a hawk on a pine branch against a ground of black lacquer gradually changing to kinpun toward the bottom case; the third of lenticular plan decorated in black, silver, and gold togidashi maki-e with an immortal chewing on a leafy root, fitted with a gilt bead ojime
2 3/4in (6.9cm) high, the largest (3).
