Qingbai prayer beads (fozhu, 佛珠), often referred to as mala beads, were used as aids when repeating mantras during Buddhist practice. A complete mala typically comprises 108 beads, a sacred number in Buddhism symbolising the removal of worldly desires. In this example, only 102 beads remain, likely due to losses sustained during historical restringing.
