The present lot finely potted with a melon-shaped body, set with a gracefully curved spout and handle, characterized by clean lines and a refined elegant form. Its overall shape is modelled after metalwork vessels. Qingbai ware, also known as 'shallow blue' 影青 (yingqing), refers to a type of porcelain made by applying a transparent glaze with a bluish tint over a white porcelain body. During the Song dynasty, the production of qingbai wares was mainly centred in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, though other regions such as Zhejiang and Fujian also produced Qingbai wares in large quantities. These wares were not only supplied for domestic use but were also exported overseas.

See a similar qingbai ewer and cover, Northern Song dynasty, in the collection of the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka (acc.no.00623).

See also a similar but slightly larger qingbai lobed ewer, Northern Song dynasty, which was sold at Christie's New York, 22 March 2018, lot 531.
