This piece features a partial 'kiln transmutation effect' 窯變 (yaobian) of Jun glaze, achieved by applying a copper-bearing colorant to selected areas over the sky-blue glaze. After firing, this produced purplish patches, as seen in the present lot. The irregular purple splashes stand in striking contrast with the milky and opalescent blue ground. This interplay of colour and form bears a remarkable resemblance to abstract art, inviting the viewer's imagination. Compare with a related Junyao purple-splashed dish, Song dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集:兩宋瓷器), Hong Kong, 1996, pl.226, p.250.

In the Song dynasty, the bases of Jun ware were typically fully glazed, leaving only the body of the foot rim exposed. In contrast, as seen in the present lot, Jun ware produced during the Jin and Yuan dynasties often feature unglazed bases and foot rims. See a related purple-splashed dish, Yuan dynasty, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Selection of Jun Ware: the Palace Museum's Collection and Archaeological Excavation (鈞瓷雅集:故宮博物院珍藏及出土鈞窯瓷器薈萃), Beijing, 2013, pp.162-163, no.57.

See a related purple-splashed Junyao dish, Yuan dynasty, which was sold at Christie's New York, 15 September 2016, lot 803.
