Georges de Batz (active mid-20th century), was a passionate and eclectic collector of Chinese ceramics and Asian art. Based in New York and San Francisco, de Batz was known for his intense engagement with the objects he collected and for his generosity to institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Achenbach Foundation. Works from his collection were exhibited at the MFA Boston in 1953 and have since been recognised for their quality and historical interest.
White-glazed wares with green-splashed decoration from the Tang dynasty represent a further refinement of the earlier white-ground, green-painted pieces that first appeared during the Northern Dynasties. Vessels of this type, including the present lot, were likely produced at the Gongxian kilns (鞏縣窯) in Henan province. See a similar green splashed ewer, Tang dynasty, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Jin and Tang Dynasties (故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集:晉唐瓷器), Hong Kong, 1996, p.181.
See a related green-splashed pottery ewer, Tang dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 29 September 2021, lot 1061.
