Classical concert guitar by Santos Hernández (1874-1943) known as La Inédita, made in
Madrid, Spain, in the year 1935, whose original label is glued to the inside and on the back with
the following inscription: Santos Hernandez | Luthier | Madrid | Aduana 27 | AÑO 1935. Made
for concert guitarist Andrés Segovia.
We also find the luthier's stamp on the heel of the neck inside the body with the inscription
SANTOS HERNANDEZ | ''LUTHIER'' | Aduana, 23-MADRID; as well as his annotation
handwritten in ink under the soundboard: Construida por | S Hernandez | Madrid 1935
The soundhole is composed of alternating black and white binding, in the center of which
is a blue and red wheat motif, surrounding the main micro-marquetry motif forming red, black, and
blue triangles.
The spruce soundboard is composed of a five-strand fan bracing, the center of which is
extended by two (original) cleats. The bracing is closed at its bottom portion by two diagonal
strands and topped with a slanted tone bar. Cedro neck and headstock; ebony fingerboard;
Brazilian rosewood back, sides, bridge, and headstock veneer ; bridge ornementation made of
bone, rosewood, and colored wood purfling; very fine shellac varnish; the entire body of the
instrument is edged with simple alternating light wood and ebony binding, and the back joint is
adorned with a light wood binding. Original tuners with engraved plates adorned with a lyre, with
mother-of-pearl buttons.
As is common on guitars of this era due to humidity variations, the following are noted on
the soundboard: under the bridge, two hairline splits a few centimeters long, as well as a thin split
running between the bridge and the soundhole along the central vertical brace; there is also a thin
split on the soundboard along the edge of the bass-side fingerboard; we note the addition of a ~1
cm by 2 cm piece canvas along the central brace. Some light signs of use.
Nut spacing: 51 mm / Scale length: 654 mm / Weight: 1444 g
Exceptionally well-preserved and original condition.
The guitar is presented in its original case bearing the label of Matilde Ruiz | Vda. De
Santos Hernández | Instrumentos | Accesorios | Aduana, 23 - MADRID
