ANDERSEN SITS FOR A PORTRAIT.

[HANSEN, GEORG EMIL. 1833-1891.] H.C. Andersen. Glass plate photographic negative, being a portrait of Hans Christian Andersen, seated, 170 x 135 mm, in paper envelope, the envelope titled "H.C. Andersen" and bearing text and numeric notations in pencil and ink, the negative with a strip of paper adhered at the top edge with a reference number. Together with an undated modern contact print from the negative.

This seated portrait of Andersen was probably taken around 1869 and later used as the original for a montage of Andersen with Charlotte Melchior, whose image was added standing between Andersen and the small table beside him. A print of the combined montage was presented to Andersen as a gift on his 70th birthday and now resides in the Danish Royal Library.
