ORIGINAL PORTRAIT FROM LIFE OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN. J. KAYSER, artist. Bust portrait of Andersen from life, pencil on paper, oval, 220 x 150 mm,

J. KAYSER. C. 1813-1853. Portrait of Hans Christian Andersen. Pencil on paper, oval, 220 x 150 mm, signed Kayser 1852 at lower margin, and titled "H.C. Andersen — Homme de lettres" on verso. Some browning and slight warping of paper. Framed.

A rare portrait of Andersen drawn from life. Andersen wrote to the artist Kayser on May 5, 1852, clarifying the terms of his sitting, and rather testily advising that he expected to be paid, and did not want to purchase the finished product.
