PRESENTATION COPY FOR BAYARD TAYLOR.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Gesammelte Historien. Leipzig: L. Wiedemann, 1875. 8vo (170 x 125 mm). 75 wood engraved illustrations by E. Kretzschnar after V. Pedersen. Contemporary half morocco, marbled boards. Upper joint and hinge starting, small loss to spine, lightly rubbed, some mostly marginal spotting, top line of inscription just shaved.
Provenance: Bayard Taylor (American literary critic and poet, 1825-1878, presentation inscription, May 1857); William F. Gable (gift inscription from Bayard's wife, 1913); Anderson Galleries 1937, Nov. 11, 1937, lot 14.

PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN TO AMERICAN AUTHOR BAYARD TAYLOR. On May 12, 1857, while visiting Copenhagen during his return from a trip to Germany, Bayard Taylor wrote a letter to Andersen in German asking to meet him in person. Recalling that they had been introduced by a mutual friend, Barclay Pennock, in the winter of 1851, he petitioned that he would not like to leave Copenhagen without meeting Andersen. Taylor had been in Germany to visit with his friend Alexander von Humboldt. Bayard Taylor's wife, Maria Hansen, to whom he was married in October 1857, was the daughter of Danish and German astronomer Peter Hansen. He later served as the United States minister to Prussia. A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, LINKING TWO 19th-CENTURY AUTHORS. Later edition in German.
