PRESENTATION COPY TO AMALIE MELDAHL.

Volume 3 only (of 3). 8vo (165 x 122 mm). Half-title, numerous illustrations after Lorenz Frolich. Publisher's red blind-stamped cloth, upper cover with central vignette gilt, spine decoratively gilt, hinges starting, spine leaned, some light wear and staining, small stain to fore-margin.
Provenance: Amalie Meldahl (presentation inscription from Andersen).

PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN TO AMALIE MELDAHL: "Fru Etatsraadinde / Amalie Meldahl / en hjertelig Hilsen i Julen / 1874 / Ærbødigt / H. C. Andersen" ["Mrs. State councilloress [honorific] / Amalie Meldahl / an affectionate Greeting at Christmas / 1874 / reverently / H. C. Andersen"]. Amalie Meldahl was the wife of Danish architect Ferdinand Meldahl, and a fellow member, along with Andersen, of the Order of the Dannebrog. According to the H. C. Andersen Centret letter database, Ferdinand Meldahl and Andersen exchanged letters on Christmas Eve, 1874. Andersen wrote a song on the occasion of Ferdinand and Amalie's wedding in 1860 (see his letter to Ferdinand Meldahl, June 4, 1860, a typescript of which is laid in to the present copy.) Andersen also created a paper cutting of two ballet dancers on a stage for the Meldahl's daughter (which was sold Sotheby's London, Nov. 11, 1981, lot 176A). A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY. Nielsen 1039.
