3 volumes. 8vo (170 x 127 mm). Half-titles and woodcut titles printed on a tinted background in each volume, woodcut frontispiece printed on a tinted background in the first volume, numerous illustrations throughout after Pedersen. Publisher's pictorial blue cloth blocked in gilt and black. Vol. 1 rebound in modern blue cloth with original covers and spine laid down, a few hinges starting or repaired, some light chipping or wear, internal spotting.
Provenance: Erik Lassen Oksen (presentation inscription from Andersen).

PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN TO ERIK LASSEN OKSEN: "Min elskværdige ... / .. i Cand: Oksen en / venlig Erindring om Jule aften / 1873. / H. C. Andersen." ["My amiable [...] / [...] Cand. Oksen a / friendly / remembrance of Christmas Eve / 1873 / H. C. Andersen."]. Hans Christian Andersen would spend Christmas Eve 1873 in his apartment in Nyhavn with theology student Erik Lassen Oksen. In a letter to Henriette Collin on December 23, 1873, Andersen writes that he is otherwise looking forward to "a quiet evening, without a Christmas tree, without a Christmas visitor" (see the H. C. Andersen Centret letter database). A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY. Fourth edition (stated).
