PRESENTATION COPY FOR THE MICHELSENS.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Eventyr og Historier ... Ny samling. Copenhagen: C. A. Reitzels, 1872.
8vo (168 x 126 mm). Half-title. Publisher's blue cloth decorated in gilt and blind, rebacked with portion of original spine laid-down, minor mostly marginal soiling or dust-soiling to a few leaves.
Provenance: Mrs. Ida Michelsen (presentation inscription from Andersen).

PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN TO MRS. IDA MICHELSEN: "Hof og Ordensjuvelerer / Michelsens [ædle] Hustru, en kærlige Moder, Den trofaste i Venskab / fru Ida Michelsen / en hjertelig Hilsen i foraaret 1872 / fra H. C. Andersen." ["Court-jeweller / Michelsen's [noble] wife, a loving Mother, the true in friendship / Mrs. Ida Michelsen / a cordial Greeting in the spring 1872 / from H. C. Andersen."]. Ida Michelsen was married to Danish jeweller Anton Michelsen. On 9 February 1872, Andersen wrote to Dorothea Melchior explaining, in part, that he would be attending a silver wedding anniversary celebration for Ida and Anton Michelson, for which he wrote a song (see the H. C. Andersen Centret letter database). Anton Michelson, who came from a long line of metalsmiths, founded his eponymous firm, A. Michelsen, in 1841; the firm was responsible for executing all Danish orders. Michelsen was the only Danish goldsmith who was represented at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. His son, grandson, and great grandson would operate the A. Michelsen firm until 1985, when it merged with Georg Jensen, which later merged to form Royal Copenhagen.

FIRST EDITION of one of Andersen's later collections of Fairy Tales. Nielsen 1017.
