E.H. SHEPARD DRAWING FOR "THE TINDER BOX."

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. SHEPARD, ERNEST H, illustrator. He was rich now, he had fine clothes. Original pen-and-ink drawing over pencil, on board, 158 x 124 mm, with penciled caption at lower margin of image area "No 3. He was rich now, he had fine clothes," and titled "Tinder Box" at top outside of image area, along with the pencil notation "Reduce by 1/3" and "Hans Andersen" in ink at bottom right. Light toning to image area inside mat edges, tape on verso, some adhesive residue and two small perforations in board at upper right. Matted.

One of Andersen's earliest fairy tales, this title has been illustrated by a long list of artists, including Kay Nielsen, Arthur Rackham and Harry Clarke. E.H. Shepard, best known for his drawings for A.A. Milne's "Pooh" stories, joined that list of illustrators with the publication of a 1961 edition from Oxford University Press.
