ON RASMUS NIELSEN AND THE SNOWMAN.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Autograph Letter Signed ("H.C. Andersen") to Mrs. [Steen] Bille discussing the theater and applauding Rasmus Nielsen's interpretation of his tale "The Snowman," 4 pp, 8vo (210 x 134 mm), ink on plain paper, Copenhagen, March 15, 1869, small closed tears at folds.

During the spring of 1869, the eminent professor Rasmus Nielsen gave a series of lectures, reading Andersen's tale "Sneemanden" ("The Snowman") in full and then analyzing it in detail. Later that year, the young Georg Brandes would publish his landmark essays on Andersen's tales, the two events signaling Andersen's acceptance into the halls of literature.

Carl Steen Andersen Bille and his wife Louise were among the closest friends of Andersen's later in his life. He references in the letter a wonderful toast at an upcoming Thursday dinner table, Thursdays being reserved for dinner at the table of the Melchiors, alongside the Billes. A month before he died, Andersen added a codicil to his will stipulating that all of his "manuscripts and letters of interest" should be given to Bille, and to Nicolai Bøgh, in order that they could collect and publish Andersen's large correspondence posthumously.
