Famed Danish critic Georg Brandes wrote a seminal article in 1869 on Hans Christian Andersen as a seminal essay on Andersen as a fairy-tale poet. Brandes assessment of the life and work of Andersen was at times sharply critical of Andersen's treatment of criticism, but largely in line with Andersen's own romantic view of his life and work. At the time, the famous critic was still a graduate student, and his paper was foundational for both critic and subject. They had known each other for some time, but as Brandes notes, "My cordial recognition of his genius drew us more closely together; he often came to see me and was very ready to read his new works aloud to me. It is hardly saying too much to declare that this paper secured me his friendship" (Recollections of My Childhood and Youth, 1906). Brandes's description of the paper and its composition illuminates the development of his critical theory, and the paper itself had a profound effect on modern criticism of Andersen and his fairy tales.
