PRESENTATION COPY FOR LAURITZ ECKHARDT.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Femten Eventyr og Historier. Copenhagen: C.A. Reitzel, 1867.
8vo (236 x 162 mm). Publisher's maroon cloth, upper cover and spine gilt.

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed "Hr. L. Eckardt/ en hjertelig Hilsen paa Fødselsdagen/ den 12 Jan. 1868/ fra/ H.C. Andersen. ["Mr. L. Eckhardt / an affectionate Greeting on your Birthday / the 12th of Jan 1868. / from / H. C. Andersen."] Lauritz Eckardt was a dancer with the Royal Theater, but more importantly to Andersen he was the roommate and close friend of Harald Scharff. Andersen had met Eckardt and Scharff in Paris in 1857, beginning a very close relationship with the two men over the next few years. Andersen was particularly enamored of Scharff, and Andersen's diaries suggest a sexual relationship at times. According to biographer Jackie Wullschlager, during 1861-2, the relationship brought Andersen "joy, some kind of sexual fulfillment, and a temporary end to loneliness." Scharff provided the inspiration for Andersen's 1861 tale The Snowman. The relationship ended in 1863, but Andersen continued to ask after Scharff throughout the 1860s, and as seen by this presentation managed to maintain a relationship with Eckardt. Nielsen 939.
