COMPLETE SET OF SIX EVENTYR PAMPHLETS.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Eventyr, fortalte for Børn. Copenhagen: C.A. Reitzel, 1844-1847.
First and second series, comprising 6 pamphlets in one volume. 8vo (125 x 80 mm). General titles dated 1846 and 1847 and general indices for each series; 4-page preface dated 1837 for first series; dedication leaf to Johanne Louise Heiberg for second series. Parts 1&4: general title pages and combined contents; parts 2, 3, 5 & 6: title pages (without half-titles and individual contents leaves, as usual). Contemporary red half calf, patterned paper-covered boards, very lightly rubbed, some internal spotting and staining.

COMPLETE SET OF PAMPHLETS COMPRISING THE FIRST CYCLE OF ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES, all second printings. "During Andersen's lifetime 162 of his Fairy Tales were published, but the scarcest and most difficult to obtain are these six little pamphlets. We do not know exactly how many, or how few, copies were printed, but we do know that no copy with all the title pages and tables of contents has ever been offered for sale by any dealer or at any auction. To my knowledge, only five or six complete copies of the first printings (1835-1842) still exist. Even the second printing of the six pamphlets in their entirety (1842-1847) is exceedingly scarce and difficult to obtain" (Hersholt, p 25). "The tales of Hans Andersen are unique. Unlike Perrault's or Grimm's his stories were original inventions. They are of two kinds. The Eventyr are fairy tales of supernatural creatures and fantastic happenings; the Historier are stories of everyday people and occurrences. To the fashioning of both he brought his own childlike imagination and a creative faculty and originality strangely lacking in his other writings" (PMM 299). Hersholt, pp 24-27; Nielsen 266n, 267-270, 277-279, 304-305, 326-328, 353-355, 409-411.
