PRESENTATION COPY FOR PROFESSOR HOEDT

8vo (148 x 92 mm). Publisher's brown cloth, sides with blind relief borders, central portrait medallion in relief on upper cover, hinges repaired, spine ends repaired, a few leaves with scattered spotting.
Provenance: Professor F.L. Hoedt (presentation inscription from Andersen).

PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN TO PROFESSER FREDERIK HOEDT: "Den rigt begavede, Kjære / Professor Höedt / fra hans Ven og / Beundrer / H. C. Andersen." ["The richly gifted, dear / professor Höedt / from his friend and admirer / H. C. Andersen."] Hoedt is frequently mentioned in Andersen's diaries. According to Andersen, Hoedt was "the first, with the exception of myself, who had read my stories at the Student's Association" (The Story of My Life, New York, 1872, p.545). Describing the premier of Da Spanierne var her ("When Spaniards Were Here") at the Royal Danish Theatre on 6 April 1865, Andersen writes: "My fried, Professor Hoedt, who had great influence in the theatre, showed a like sympathy" (ibid. p.503).

FIRST EDITION, collecting 42 of Andersen's poems, both "known and forgotten," including many published for the first time. Nielsen 940, 941-962.
