FIRST EDITION OF THE SECOND SERIES, FOURTH BOOK — A PRESENTATION COPY FOR THORA HARTMANN, "Fru Thora Hartmann/ hjerteligt og ærbødigt/ H.C. Andersen" ["Mrs. Thora Hartmann/ cordially and reverently/ H.C. Andersen"]. Hartmann (nee Jacobsen) was married to Andersen's dear friend and collaborator the composer J.P.E. Hartmann, one of the most important Danish composers of the 19th-century. In 1845, they completed Liden Kirsten (Little Kirsten) featuring Andersen's libretto set to Hartmann's music, which is Andersen's most successful musical work and has been called a Danish national opera. Andersen had known Thora Hartmann first as Thora Jacobsen dating back at least to the 1840s, and after the tragic death of his friend Hartmann's first wife Emma Zinn, Hartmann married her friend Thora Jacobsen. This collection contains the first appearance of four of Andersen's tales "The Toad," "Aunty," "The Porter's Son," and "Kept Secret but not Forgotten," and the first book appearance of his famous "The Snowdrop" and "Moving Day." Nielsen 910, 911-915.
