PRESENTATION COPY FOR FREDERIK BØGH.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Nye Eventyr og Historier. Anden Raekke. Anden Samling. Copenhagen: C.A. Reitzels, 1862 [1861]. 8vo (166 x 115 mm). Later calf, gilt, patterned endpapers, with early photographic oval bust portrait of Andersen, enhanced with ink detail, and inserted into endpaper verso as frontispiece.
Provenance: H.C. Andersen (presentation inscription to): Frederik Bøgh; Niels Munk Plum (bookplate).

PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO FREDERIK BØGH, "VALKYRIENS DIGTER [POET OF THE VALKYRIES]," a reference to Bøgh's Valkyrien: Et nordisk digt i tyve sange, published in 1861. On November 4, 1861, Bøgh had sent Andersen a copy which he presented with a warm tribute, beginning (in translation), "To the poet Hans Christian Andersen/ You, who gave me so much joy/ Ever since I was a little boy...." Bøgh first appears in the daybook on November 10, 1861, so this exchange of works between the two poets marks the beginning of one of the most important friendships of his late life. Bogh was also a friend of painter Carl Bloch, whom Andersen greatly admired, and importantly the brother of Nicolai Bøgh, who Andersen appointed along with Carl Steen Bille as the gatekeeper of his literary legacy a month before he died. Nielsen 828, 829-831.
