8vo (172 x 101 mm). Half-title, numerous illustrations by Bertall. Contemporary calf-backed mottled paper boards, repairs to hinges and spine, some spotting, margin trimmed just affecting two letters of Andersen's signature.
Provenance: Edmond Bournonville (presentation inscription from the author); Charlotte Bournonville (signature on flyleaf); Estrid Lund (signature in pencil on pastedown, 1925).

PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN TO EDMOND BOURNONVILLE: "Til / Edmond Bournonville / fra / has ven / H. C. Anders[en]" ["For Edmond Bournonville from his friend H. C. Anders[en]"]. Edmond Bournonville was the son of Andersen's close friend, renowned choreographer and ballet dancer August Bournonville who was the leader of the Royal Danish Ballet. Edmond Bournonville was 10 years old when he received this book from Andersen. The book also bears the signature of Edmond's older sister, Charlotte Bournonville, who would eventually become a ballet dancer. August Bournonville was very close with Andersen, and the two collaborated on several opera and ballet productions, including "Liden Kirsten." A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY.
