PRESENTATION TO EDGAR COLLIN.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Publisher's pictorial wrappers only for Historier (C.A. Reitzels, 1855) with autograph inscription from Andersen to Edgar Collin, 178 x 135 mm, separated at spine, chipped, some soiling, spine mostly perished.

INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN, for "Min kjære Edgar Collin." Edgar Collin (1836-1906) was the son of Edvard Collin (1808-1886), Andersen's closest friend early in his life and the inspiration for "The Little Mermaid," written just on the heels of Collin's engagement to his wife. Edvard himself was also the son of Andersen's greatest patron Jonas Collin (1776-1861). In Andersen's original version of "The Little Mermaid," the mermaid, spurned by her human prince, alone and unloved dissolves into seafoam. In this telling, Andersen is the mermaid, and Edvard his prince. Remarkably, Andersen remained intimate with the Collin family throughout his life, and in the 1850s travelled extensively with Edvard's sons Edgar and Jonas.
