PRESENTATION COPY FOR THE DIRECTOR OF THE 1851 PRODUCTION.

12mo (168 x 108 mm). Publisher's purple cloth, spine gilt, covers ruled in blind, spine and margins of cover faded.
Provenance: H.C. Andersen, inscribed to Hans Lange on endpaper; Herman Heilbuth (1861-1945, Danish collector, his stamp to endpaper, original receipt laid-in).

PRESENTATION COPY TO "HER THEATERDIREKTOR LANGE," Hans Wilhelm Lange (1815-1873), director of the Casino Theater in Copenhagen, who put on the debut production of Hyldemoer in 1851. Beginning in 1848, Andersen wrote and adapted several dramatic works for his good friend Lange, notably Meer end Perler og Guld (More than Pearls and Gold) from 1849, and in the following years the romantic comedies Ole Lukøje (Wee Willie Winkie) and Hyldemoer (The Elder-Tree Mother). The Casino Theater operated more like a "people's theater," offering Andersen a range of productions that had not been available through the Royal Theater, including his successful adaptation of the Viennese Zauberspiel, with elements of magic and folklore. In the case of Hyldemoer, Andersen and Lange once again faced the dilemma of portraying the imagination within the confines of the stage.
