FIRST THREE PAMPHLETS OF EVENTYR.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Eventyr, Fortalte For Børn. Copenhagen: C. A. Reitzel, printed 1846, 1844, 1837.
First series only, comprising 3 pamphlets in one volume. 8vo (124 x 80 mm). Half-title prior to part 1, general title page and introduction prior to part 1, section titles for parts 2 and 3. Later half calf, marbled boards, gilt, hinges loose, closed tear to half-title repaired verso, some staining.

THE FIRST THREE PAMPHLETS OF THE FIRST CYCLE OF ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES, FIRST PRINTING OF THE THIRD PAMPHLET, parts 1 & 2 the second issue. The third part contains the first printed appearance of "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Little Mermaid." "The tales of Hans Andersen are unique. Unlike Perrault's or Grimm's his stories were original inventions. They are of two kinds. The Eventyr are fairy tales of supernatural creatures and fantastic happenings; the Historie are stories of everyday people and occurrences. To the fashioning of both he brought his own childlike imagination and a creative faculty and originality strangely lacking in his other writings" (PMM 299). Hersholt pp 24-27; Nielsen 266n, 277, 303.
