4 volumes. 8vo (164 x 123 mm). Modern morocco-backed patterned paper boards, original pictorial front wrappers bound in volumes 1-3, minor foxing throughout.

PRESENTATION COPIES, INSCRIBED FOR "FRU [JULIANE] NAEBOE," FIRST EDITIONS, except for first pamphlet with title page dated 1860: 1: "Fru Næboe/ hjerteligt / H.C. Andersen" [Mrs Næboe/ cordially/ H.C. Andersen"]. 2. "Fru Næboe/ hjerteligt/ forfatteren ["Mrs Næboe/ cordially/ the author"]. 3: "Fru Næboe/ med hjertelig/ Hilsen fra/ H.C. Andersen" ["Mrs Næboe/ with cordial greetings from/ H.C. Andersen"]. 4: "Fru Næboe en venlig, hjertelig/ Jule-hilsen fra/ H.C. Andersen" ["Mrs Næboe a friendly, cordial/ Christmas-greeting from/ H.C. Andersen"]. The Næboe family was an important presence in Andersen's life, particularly the sisters Helene Balling (née Næboe) and Augusta Næboe, and their mother Juliane. Helene Balling had married Andersen's early benefactor Jonathan Balling (1773-1829) and had early on been part of his dinner circuit. He continued dining with the family after Jonathan's death in 1829, maintaining a close relationship and correspondence. In 1873, he went to live with the Balling-Næboes at Nyhavn 18, before moving to the Melchior house in June 1875.

FIRST EDITIONS OF THE FIRST SERIES OF NYE EVENTYR OG HISTORIER. The Andersen Museum has a number of other dedication copies to the Næboes from the collection of Jonas Skougaard (1896-1968). Nielsen 767, 768-772, 774, 775-776, 782, 783-787, 794, 795-798.
