ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. PEDERSEN, VILHELM, ILLUSTRATIONS. Historier. Copenhagen: C.A. Reitzels, 1852-1853.
2 parts in 2 volumes. 8vo (180 x 112 mm). Half-titles. 20th-century patterned paper boards, morocco lettering pieces gilt, stamp-signed "Anker Kysters EFTF. 1976"; slipcase; publisher's printed wrappers bound in, marginal repairs to wrappers, spines slightly sunned, some browning and spotting, wrappers and a few leaves at beginning and end of each volume bound in on stubs.
Provenance: Helene Balling (presentation inscription from Andersen in the second volume).
PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN TO H[ELENE] BALLING in the: "Fru H. Balling / en venlig Jule Hilsen / fra forfatteren" ("Miss H. Balling / a friendly Christmas Greeting / from the author"). Helene Balling was married to Jonathan Balling, a Danish warehouse administrator and early benefactor of Andersen. When Andersen first moved to Copenhagen in 1827, he established a regular dinner rotation, through which he was a regular dinner guest in various families' homes. In his early years in Copenhagen, these families acted as a benefactor to a poor student; he continued the practice throughout most of his life, and by the time he had gained more acclaim as an author, he became an engaging guest of honor. In the early years of his dinner rotation, he would dine with Jonathan Balling every Saturday evening. Andersen corresponded regularly with both Helene and Jonathan Balling throughout the course of his life. A VERY FINE ASSOCIATION COPY.
FIRST EDITION OF THE STORIES, including "It's Quite True," and "The Goblin and the Grocer." Of the 12 tales included in the work, 8 are printed in this edition for the first time. Hersholt p 28; Nielsen 606, 616.
