FAIRY TALES IN FULL RED MOROCCO BY KYSTER.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. PEDERSEN, VILHELM, Illustrator. H. C. Andersen's Eventyr. Copenhagen: C.A. Reitzels, 1850 [wrappers dated 1849].
8vo (162 x 123 mm). Half-title, pictorial tinted frontispiece and title, 16 full-page wood engraved plates, and numerous in-text wood-engraved illustrations all after Vilhelm Pedersen; CLIPPED SIGNATURES OF ANDERSEN AND PEDERSEN MOUNTED TO BLANK SHEET AT END. Late 19th or early 20th-century red morocco gilt, upper cover with central gilt vignette after the final illustration, turn-ins gilt, stamp-signed "Anker Kyster" on lower cover; original yellow pictorial wrappers from 1849 part bound-in; morocco-tipped slipcase, tiny scuff at foot of spine, plate facing p.168 disbound, tiny chip to blank foremargin of p.218, neat marginal repair to final plate.

FIRST EDITION ILLUSTRATED BY PEDERSEN, WITH SIGNATURES OF BOTH ANDERSEN AND PEDERSEN MOUNTED AND BOUND-IN, IN A FINE DANISH BINDING BY KYSTER. Commissioned jointly by Reitzel and the Leipzig publisher Carl Lorck, Pedersen's illustrations are among the earliest and most recognizable, and Pedersen the first of the "official" Andersen illustrators. This edition collects 45 fairy tales including his most famous. It was issued in Leipzig in 1849, and serially in 5 installments by Reitzel in the same year, before collecting them in book form as here. Kyster became an apprentice bookbinder in 1882, working in Denmark, Paris, Zurich, Rome and Munich. He established himself as a master bookbinder in Copenhagen in 1892. Nielsen 551.
